My path into nuclear engineering.

A closer look at my background, the reasons I chose nuclear engineering, and the career I am working toward.

My Background

I am a second-year Nuclear Engineering student at Ontario Tech University with a strong interest in energy systems, engineering design, and the operation of complex technical facilities. I chose nuclear engineering because it combines physics, engineering, problem-solving, and large-scale infrastructure in a field that has a direct impact on Ontario's energy system.

Why Nuclear

My interest in nuclear energy comes from both personal and technical influences. Growing up, I was exposed to the industry through my grandfather, who spent more than 25 years working at Ontario Power Generation. As I learned more about Ontario’s electricity system, I became increasingly interested in nuclear power because of its ability to provide reliable, large-scale, low-carbon electricity. I am particularly interested in reactor technology, nuclear operations, plant systems, and the ongoing development of new nuclear projects in Canada.

What I’m Working Toward

My long-term goal is to build a career within Canada’s nuclear industry, with a particular interest in plant operations and eventually pursuing qualification as an Authorized Nuclear Operator. Through my engineering degree, I am continuing to develop my technical knowledge in areas such as reactor systems, engineering analysis, programming, and design. I am also looking for opportunities to gain practical industry experience through co-op placements and involvement with the broader nuclear community.

Beyond Engineering

Outside of academics, I have developed much of my leadership experience through the Canadian Cadet Program. My roles have involved supervising teams, coordinating operations, maintaining standards, mentoring junior staff, and contributing to planning and organizational improvement. I also serve as a student representative within Ontario Tech University governance, where I contribute to discussions and decisions affecting the university community. These experiences have strengthened my communication, teamwork, leadership, and decision-making skills while giving me opportunities to work with people from a wide range of backgrounds.
